Deborah Cahn don’t want to Netflix‘S The diplomat feels like it has been ripped from the headlines, but she still draws much of her inspiration from the current political climate, including the recent US elections.
The series creator, who celebrated the series’ three Golden Globe nominations Monday morning, including one for Best Television Series – Drama, told Deadline that Donald Trump’s re-election has “absolutely” influenced her creative vision.
“The next four years will be very different from the past four, but much more similar to the world that was in my head when I first developed the series, namely: how do we interact in the world with other countries when standing? “The basic agreements we have made with most of our allies are in question?” she said. “So I worry about the world, but I believe we have plenty to talk about.”
Keri Russell and Allison Janney also received Globes nominations for their roles in the series’ second season The diplomat. Russell was also honored for playing U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler in Season 1, while Season 2 marks Janney’s first turn as Vice President Grace Penn.
Seeing them both nominated for their work was particularly exciting for Cahn, who says their interactions are some of her proudest moments from the second season.
“It was a really great opportunity to dig deeper into questions that I think we all spend a lot of time thinking about and wondering about,” Cahn explains. “These people we read about in the newspapers all the time. These decisions that we see when they’re done – where do those decisions come from? It was very nice to be able to start those conversations.”
Given the explosive ending to Season 2, it should come as no surprise that Janney will return for Season 3, which Cahn confirmed to Deadline on Monday. Production is currently taking place in New York and London.
She remained tight-lipped about what’s to come, but she did say, “I know people always say this: I’m really excited about next season, but I’m really excited about this season. I’m excited to share it with people.”
In addition to Russell and Janney, Cahn also wanted to highlight Season 2 directors Alex Graves and Tucker Gates, who she said “have done a great, great job this year, and it was so much fun working with them.” She also gave a nod to executive producer Janice Williams, who is “the magical being that makes it all happen.”
